Boy Scouts of America Celebrate 100 Years of Service

100 Years of ScoutingCentennial: Scouting Good For Life

For 100 years, Scouting has captured the imagination and interest young people, providing fun and outdoor adventure while instilling an ethic of service and citizenship for more than 100 million members. Since the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) was officially incorporated on February 8, 1910, research shows that over 50% of men in the United States have had some Scouting involvement throughout their lifetime. The Scouting movement is composed of 2.8 million young people between the ages of seven and 20 and 1.1 million volunteers in more than 290 local councils throughout the United States. Locally, the Northern Star Council serves more than 95,000 boys and girls, ages 6 through 20, through nearly 24,000 volunteers. More than 1,100 community organizations, representing educational, religious, nonprofit, civic, and business organizations join in partnership to charter (sponsor) 1,589 Scouting units.

Throughout 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate its centennial anniversary milestone with a rallying call that will be heard across the nation as Scouts gather in their communities to pay tribute to the rich history and tradition of Scouting. Locally there are four major events scheduled in 2010 to mark the BSA’s 100th birthday and everyone is invited to join the party.
